Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The Department of Biology at University of Virginia highly values inclusive and respectful environments, recognizing that they enhance student success, research quality, and administrative achievement. All members of the department firmly oppose any discrimination based on race, color, gender identity, socioeconomic status, and religious and cultural backgrounds.  Our goals are to foster an inclusive and respectful atmosphere in classrooms, labs, and offices, and to increase our understanding of the societal and political implications of biological science, including the negative history of eugenics in the early 20th century to which some of our departmental predecessors contributed.
